The Race for the Roses

I am so excited for this weekend! We are celebrating my sister’s birthday, and tomorrow is Derby Day! My family lived in Louisville, KY for 10 years, so I feel a certain affinity for the Kentucky Derby. Did you know that all the schools in Louisville close today, on Oaks Day (the races on the Friday before the Derby)? Believe me, people in Louisville take this event quite seriously!!

For my part, I was never a huge fan of horse racing or the taste of mint juleps (why drink bourbon when you can have a Miller Lite?), but I love traditions, and there are aspects of the Derby I just love! Namely the hats and Derby Pie…so fun and SOOO good!

Also, because I know nothing about horse racing, and I would never gamble more than $10 on a race, I pick my horses solely by their names and the colors of the jockey’s jerseys! This year, I am going with “Chocolate Candy”…it’s hard to go wrong with a name like that!! Hee hee

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and Derby Day!!

P.S. I was just perusing the KY Derby official website and Bobby Flay has posted some amazing Southern/Derby-esque recipes for your own Derby Party like “Milk Chocolate Banana Pudding”…yes please!

That hat is seriously TDF.

Going to the Derby is so on my life list of things to do. Just love the tradition and, of course, the horses.

Have a fantastic weekend!

My husband and I stayed up until 12:30am over here in Germany to watch the 2 minutes of racing! We used to go to Keeneland twice a year in college with a friend of mine in Lexington. Beautiful state! I got the cutest platter from the Keeneland Shop for my wedding that has jockey silks all the way around the rim! I just came across your blog and can't wait to read more! I'm hosting a blog giveaway at www.gleatieanddeaner.blogspot.com if you are interested!!
